Signs of a Failing Ignition Coil
The ignition coil steps up your battery's voltage to the thousands of volts needed to fire each spark plug. When one starts failing, the symptoms usually show up as engine performance issues:
1. Engine misfire or rough idle
A weak or intermittent spark means that cylinder isn't firing cleanly on every stroke, which often feels like a shudder or stumble, especially at idle.
2. Check Engine Light with a misfire code
Codes in the P0300-P0308 range specifically point to a misfire, often on a particular cylinder - a strong clue toward that cylinder's coil (or spark plug).
3. Reduced fuel economy
An engine compensating for a weak cylinder tends to run less efficiently overall.
4. Difficulty starting
If a coil has failed completely, the engine may crank longer than normal or struggle to start, particularly in cold weather.
5. Engine hesitation or stalling under load
Accelerating or climbing a grade puts more demand on the ignition system - a marginal coil often shows its weakness under that extra load first.
Ignition coils are sold both individually and as sets - search your part number or select your vehicle to see exactly which fits.
